Annual Profections: The Ancient Way to Read Your Year

Annual profections activate one house of your birth chart each year, repeating every 12. How to find your profected house and time lord, and what the year stresses.

Quick answer

Annual profections are a Hellenistic timing technique that activates one house of your birth chart each year, starting with the 1st house from birth to your first birthday and moving one house a year. The cycle repeats every 12 years. The sign on the activated house and the planet ruling it become the time lord for that year, and astrologers read the house's topics as the year's theme.

Key takeaways

  • Your profected house is your age divided by 12, the remainder plus one: at 30 the remainder is 6, so the 7th house is active.
  • The planet ruling the sign on that house is your time lord, and its natal condition and transits color the year.
  • Ages 6, 18, 30, 42 and 54 activate the 7th house of partnership; 12, 24, 36, 48 and 60 return to the 1st.
  • Profections need a birth time, because the whole method starts from your rising sign.

Most timing techniques in astrology need software. Annual profections need your age, your rising sign and the ability to count to twelve.

The method is about two thousand years old. It comes from Hellenistic astrology, the Greek-language tradition of the first centuries BCE and CE, and it was largely forgotten in the West until translators brought the old texts back into circulation over the last few decades. The idea is that each year of your life activates one house of your birth chart, in order, starting from the 1st house at birth and repeating every twelve years.

This guide shows you how to find your profected house and your time lord, what each house year tends to emphasize, how astrologers use profections in love, and where the technique needs honesty.

What are annual profections?

Annual profections are a timing technique that moves one house forward through your birth chart each year. From birth to your first birthday, the 1st house is active. From your first birthday to your second, the 2nd house. At your twelfth birthday the count returns to the 1st house and starts again.

Two definitions first. Your rising sign (or Ascendant) is the zodiac sign that was coming up over the eastern horizon at the minute you were born. Your houses are twelve sections of the chart, each standing for an area of life. In the system profections use, called Whole Sign houses, each house is one entire sign, and your rising sign is the whole 1st house. Placidus vs Whole Sign houses explains the difference if you have seen another system.

The sign on your active house is your profected sign. The planet that rules that sign is your time lord for the year. Chris Brennan's book on Hellenistic astrology describes profections as one of the simplest and most widely used timing tools of that era, often read alongside the solar return chart for the same year.

How do you calculate your profection year?

Divide your age by 12, take the remainder and add one. That is your active house, counted from your rising sign.

Here is a worked example. Imagine someone with Leo rising who has just turned 30.

  1. Find the remainder. 30 divided by 12 is 2 with a remainder of 6.
  2. Add one. 6 plus 1 is 7. The 7th house is active this year.
  3. Count the sign. Leo is the 1st house. Counting forward, Virgo is 2nd, Libra 3rd, Scorpio 4th, Sagittarius 5th, Capricorn 6th and Aquarius is the 7th. Aquarius is the profected sign.
  4. Find the ruler. Aquarius is ruled by Saturn in traditional astrology (modern astrologers add Uranus). Saturn is the time lord.

So this person is in a 7th house, Aquarius, Saturn year from their thirtieth birthday to their thirty-first. Next year, at 31, the 8th house (Pisces, ruled by Jupiter) takes over.

Because the cycle is twelve years long, the same house comes back at the same ages for everyone. What differs is the sign on it and the planet in charge, which depends on your rising sign.

What is a time lord and why does it matter?

The time lord is the planet that rules your profected sign, and astrologers treat it as the planet in charge of the year. Its condition in your birth chart and its transits during the year are read as the year's story.

Profections use the traditional rulers: Mars for Aries and Scorpio, Venus for Taurus and Libra, Mercury for Gemini and Virgo, the Moon for Cancer, the Sun for Leo, Jupiter for Sagittarius and Pisces, Saturn for Capricorn and Aquarius. If you have read about your chart ruler, this is the same idea applied year by year: in a 1st house year, your chart ruler is also your time lord.

Once you know the time lord, astrologers look at three things:

  • Where it sits natally. A Venus time lord in your 10th house pulls career into a love year, or love into a career year.
  • What it aspects natally. Venus square Saturn at birth tends to make a Venus year feel like love with homework attached.
  • How it is transited this year. Transits to the time lord are read as more significant than transits to other planets in the same year. If transits are new to you, what transits are covers the basics.

Robert Hand's classic on transits is useful here even though it predates the revival of profections: the profection tells you which planet to watch, and a transit guide tells you what its transits tend to feel like.

What does each profection year tend to feel like?

Each year tends to put one area of life in the foreground. Astrologers describe these as themes and questions, never as events.

Some years that people ask about most:

  • 1st house years (12, 24, 36, 48, 60): a new twelve-year cycle begins. Identity, appearance and direction come forward. People often change how they present themselves.
  • 4th house years (3, 15, 27, 39, 51): home and family. Moving house, parents, questions of belonging.
  • 5th house years (4, 16, 28, 40, 52): romance, pleasure, children and creative projects. Often described as a year for dating and play.
  • 7th house years (6, 18, 30, 42, 54): partnership. Commitments, the state of a marriage, business partners, the people who reflect you back.
  • 10th house years (9, 21, 33, 45, 57): career and reputation.
  • 12th house years (11, 23, 35, 47, 59): retreat, rest, endings, loose ends before the cycle turns.

Notice that 30 lands in a 7th house year and 29 in a 6th house year, right on top of the first Saturn return. Many people feel their late twenties as work and routine getting serious, followed by partnership getting serious. Profections and the Saturn return are two different techniques that happen to point the same way at that age.

How do astrologers use profections in love?

They look at the 7th house year, the 5th house year, and any year when Venus or the 7th house ruler is the time lord. All three are read as periods when relationship themes are louder than usual.

Take the Leo rising example again. At 30 they are in a 7th house Saturn year. An astrologer would read the year as one where partnership is the classroom and Saturn sets the tone: commitment, responsibility, tests of whether something is real. That is a description of a theme, not a forecast of a wedding or a breakup. Someone single might spend the year getting clear on what they actually want from a partner. Someone coupled might find the relationship asking for more structure or more honesty.

The same person's Venus years arrive when Taurus (their 10th house) or Libra (their 3rd house) is profected, at ages 9, 21, 33, 45 for Taurus and 2, 14, 26, 38, 50 for Libra. In those years Venus is time lord, and astrologers would watch transits to their natal Venus closely.

If you want to understand the 7th house itself before reading it by year, what the 7th house is explains what astrologers see there.

What are the limits of annual profections?

Three honest limits: they need a birth time, they are symbolic, and they describe themes rather than events.

Birth time. The whole method starts from your rising sign, which changes about every two hours. A noon chart cast for an unknown time cannot give you a profection. If you do not have your time, unknown birth time astrology explains what you can still read and how to look for a record.

Symbolic, not physical. Nothing in the sky moves one house a year. Profections are a counting system laid over the chart. The astronomy in your birth chart is real; the yearly count is a convention from the Hellenistic tradition. There is no controlled evidence that it forecasts anything, and it should not be used to make decisions about staying, leaving or committing.

Themes, not dates. A 7th house year says relationships are in focus. It cannot say who, when or how it turns out. Bernadette Brady's advice on predictive work applies here: describe the nature of the time so the person can choose well inside it.

Venara does not calculate profections. Its forecasts use transits to your birth chart, and each reading lists the placements it was built from. Profections are a good hand technique to read alongside that.

What should you do with your profection year?

Three steps:

  1. Find your rising sign. You need your birth date, time and city. If you have them, you can get your rising sign free in about 90 seconds along with your Sun, Moon and Venus.
  2. Do the count. Age divided by 12, remainder plus one, counted from your rising sign. Write down the house, the sign and the time lord for this year and next year.
  3. Write one question for the year. Turn the house into a question and return to it each month. For a 7th house year: "What am I learning about how I partner?" For a 2nd house year: "What do I actually value, and does my spending agree?"

The technique is simple enough to do on a napkin. That is part of why it lasted two thousand years.

Frequently asked questions

How do I calculate my annual profection?

Divide your current age by 12 and take the remainder, then add one. That number is your profected house, counted from your rising sign using Whole Sign houses. At age 30, the remainder is 6, so the 7th house is active. The sign in that house is your profected sign, and the planet ruling it is your time lord for the year, birthday to birthday.

What is a time lord in astrology?

A time lord is the planet put in charge of a period by a timing technique. In annual profections it is the ruler of the sign on your profected house. Astrologers look at where that planet sits in your birth chart, what it aspects and how it is being transited during the year. A year with Venus as time lord tends to bring Venus topics forward: love, pleasure, money and values.

What is a 7th house profection year?

A 7th house profection year happens at ages 6, 18, 30, 42, 54, 66 and 78. Astrologers read it as a year when partnership, commitment and other people's needs move to the front. It does not mean a wedding or a separation is on the way. It means relationships are the classroom for that year, and the time lord describes how the lessons tend to arrive.

Do annual profections work without a birth time?

Not reliably. Profections count houses from your rising sign, and the rising sign changes about every two hours. Without a birth time you do not know which sign is on your 1st house, so you cannot know which house is active. Some astrologers use the Sun sign as a stand-in, but that is a different, weaker technique and worth labeling as such.

Does Venara use annual profections in its forecasts?

No. Venara's Love Forecast and Venara Daily are built from transits to your birth chart, meaning the real positions of the planets compared with your natal placements. Venara does not calculate annual profections, secondary progressions or astrocartography. You can work out your profection by hand in under a minute once you know your rising sign.
