Calculate your birth chart
Calculated from real planetary positions for your exact time and place. Nothing is saved unless you continue to your reading.
Quick answer
A birth chart calculator works out where the Sun, Moon and planets were at the moment you were born, and which sign was rising on the eastern horizon. It needs your birth date, time and city. The calculator above shows your Sun, Moon, Venus, Mars and rising sign, the five placements that say the most about who you are and how you love.
Key takeaways
- A birth chart is a map of the sky at the exact moment and place you were born, calculated from real astronomy.
- Your birth date sets the planets, your birth time sets the rising sign and houses, and your city sets the location and time zone.
- The calculator shows your Sun, Moon, Venus, Mars and rising sign, which together describe your core self, needs, love style, drive and first impression.
- Without a birth time you still get most planet signs, but the rising sign and houses cannot be calculated honestly.
- If a planet sits in the first or last degree of a sign, or the Moon changed sign on your birthday, your exact time matters more.
The calculator above turns your birth date, time and city into the core of your birth chart: your Sun, Moon, Venus, Mars and rising sign. It takes a few seconds. Understanding what you are looking at takes a little longer, and that is what this guide is for.
Below you will find what each input does, what each result means, how accurate the numbers are, and how to handle the cases that confuse people most: an unknown birth time, a planet right on the edge of a sign, and time zones.
What is a birth chart?
A birth chart is a map of the sky at the exact moment and place you were born. It shows which zodiac sign the Sun, Moon and each planet were in, which sign was rising on the eastern horizon, and how the sky divides into twelve houses, each linked with an area of life.
The positions are real astronomy. They are calculated from an ephemeris, a table of where the planets were at any moment. The meanings astrologers attach to those positions come from a long symbolic tradition. For a longer introduction, read what a birth chart is.
What does the calculator need, and what does each input change?
The calculator needs your birth date, birth time and birth city. Each input controls a different part of the chart.
| Input | What it controls | What happens if it is missing or wrong |
|---|---|---|
| Birth date | The signs of the Sun, Moon and planets | Everything shifts; the date is essential |
| Birth time | The rising sign, the houses and the Moon's exact degree | Rising sign and houses cannot be calculated; the Moon may be off on days it changes sign |
| Birth city | Your latitude and longitude, plus your time zone | The rising sign and houses can shift, and the time zone may be applied wrongly |
The city matters in two ways. First, your position on Earth changes which part of the sky was on your horizon. Second, the city tells the calculator which time zone and daylight saving rules to use for your birth date. You enter local clock time, and the calculator converts it to universal time using the rules that applied then and there.
What do your five results mean?
The calculator shows five placements. Together they cover your core self, your emotional needs, your love style, your drive and your first impression.
- Sun sign. Your core self and what drives you. It is the sign horoscopes use, and it comes from your birth date.
- Moon sign. What you need to feel safe, cared for and at home. Astrologers often say the Moon matters most for day to day happiness in a relationship.
- Venus sign. How you love, what attracts you and how you show affection. Venus is never more than about 47 degrees from the Sun, so it is always your Sun sign or within two signs of it. What your Venus sign means goes deeper.
- Mars sign. How you pursue what you want, how desire works for you and how you handle conflict. Mars spends about 6 to 7 weeks in a sign on average.
- Rising sign. Your first impression and natural approach to life. It needs your birth time.
Astrologers read these together. Someone with a Leo Sun, Pisces Moon and Virgo Venus is not a typical Leo. They may be bright and warm in public, sensitive at home and quietly devoted in love.
How accurate is the birth chart calculator?
The planetary positions are very accurate. The calculator uses the open-source Astronomy Engine library, and in Venara's own tests against NASA JPL data and published reference charts, positions agreed to within about one arcminute, a sixtieth of a degree.
The chart uses the tropical zodiac, which divides the year by the seasons and begins at the March equinox. That is the system most Western astrologers use. Sidereal astrology, used in Vedic traditions, lines the signs up with the stars instead, and the two currently differ by about 24 degrees. If another site gives you a different sign for most planets, that is usually why. Tropical vs sidereal explains the difference.
In practice, the biggest source of error is not the math. It is the birth time. A time that was rounded, guessed or copied wrong is the most common reason for a surprising rising sign.
What if you do not know your birth time?
If you do not know your birth time, you still get most of your chart, but not all of it.
- Sun, Venus and Mars are almost always correct from the date alone.
- Moon is usually correct, but it changes sign about every 2.5 days. If it changed sign on your birth day, the result could be off. The Moon sign calculator guide explains how to check.
- Rising sign and houses cannot be calculated honestly, because they change every couple of hours.
Venara casts a no-time chart for noon and leaves the rising sign, houses and the Moon's exact degree out rather than guessing. If you can find your time on a birth certificate or hospital record, it is worth the effort.
What if you were born near a sign change?
If a planet sits in the first or last degree of a sign, you are close to a sign change, and small differences matter more.
- The Sun changes sign about once a month, on a date that shifts by a day or so from year to year. If you were born on one of those days, the calculator uses your exact time to decide. People sometimes call this being born on a cusp, but you always have one Sun sign.
- The Moon changes sign about every 2.5 days, so it is the placement most likely to change with the time of day.
- The rising sign moves about one degree every four minutes on average, so a rounded time can flip it if you are near an edge.
If you are close to a boundary, read both sign descriptions and see which one fits you. That is a reasonable way to handle it while you look for a more exact time.
What does a full birth chart include beyond these five?
A full birth chart includes much more than five placements. Venara calculates Mercury, Jupiter, Saturn, Uranus, Neptune and Pluto as well, plus the lunar nodes, the Midheaven, the twelve houses and the aspects, the angles between planets that show how they work together.
Those details add depth. Mercury shows how you think and talk. Saturn shows where you build slowly. The 7th house shows what you seek in a partner. If you want to read a full chart yourself, how to read your birth chart walks through it in order.
What should you do after using the calculator?
Start with love, because that is where your five results say the most. Three steps:
- Write down your five placements. Sun, Moon, Venus, Mars and rising. Circle the ones that surprise you.
- Read your Venus and Moon first. They describe how you love and what you need to feel safe.
- Get them explained together. You can see your free reveal for your love archetype, a short reading written for your chart and a line on the type you keep choosing.
Frequently asked questions
Is a birth chart calculator accurate?
A good one is very accurate for planetary positions, because it uses the same kind of astronomical data astronomers use. Venara's calculator uses the open-source Astronomy Engine library, and in Venara's own tests positions agreed with NASA JPL data to within about one arcminute. Accuracy then depends on your inputs, especially the birth time, which decides the rising sign and houses.
Can I get my birth chart without my birth time?
Yes, partly. Your Sun, Venus and Mars signs are almost always correct from your birth date alone, and your Moon sign usually is too. What you cannot get honestly is your rising sign or your houses, because those change every few hours. A calculator that shows them without a time is guessing, often by assuming noon.
What are the most important parts of a birth chart?
Most astrologers start with the Sun, Moon and rising sign, often called the big three. For love, Venus and Mars add a lot: Venus shows how you love and what attracts you, and Mars shows how you pursue and handle conflict. The houses and aspects then add detail about where and how these energies play out.
Why is my birth chart different on another website?
Differences usually come from inputs or method. A rounded birth time, a different city or a wrong time zone can change your rising sign and houses. Sidereal sites use a different zodiac that shifts most placements by about 24 degrees. Different house systems also place planets in different houses. This calculator uses the tropical zodiac.
What is the difference between a birth chart and a horoscope?
A birth chart is a map of the sky at your birth, unique to your date, time and place. A typical horoscope in a magazine or app is written for everyone who shares your Sun sign, whatever their birth time or place. Your birth chart includes the Sun plus the Moon, planets, rising sign and houses.
