How Venara works

How Is a Birth Chart Calculated? Inside Venara's Method

How is a birth chart calculated? Our exact method: ephemeris, time zones, tropical zodiac, houses, orbs, numerology, Human Design and how the words are checked.

Quick answer

A birth chart is calculated by converting your local birth time to universal time, finding each planet's position from an astronomical ephemeris, placing those positions in zodiac signs, and using your latitude and longitude to find the rising sign and houses. Venara uses the tropical zodiac, the open-source Astronomy Engine library, Placidus houses (Whole Sign above 66 degrees latitude) and fixed aspect orbs.

Key takeaways

  • A chart starts with converting your local birth time to universal time using the historical time zone rules for your city.
  • Planet positions come from an astronomical ephemeris; in our tests they agreed with NASA JPL data and reference charts to within about one arcminute.
  • Without a birth time, the rising sign, houses and the Moon's exact degree are left out rather than guessed.
  • Every report section lists the placements it was built from, and a validator rejects sentences that mention anything not in your chart.

If a reading tells you something about your Venus, you deserve to know where that Venus came from. Was it calculated properly? For the right time zone? In which zodiac? This page answers those questions for every chart we produce.

Below is our full method, step by step: how your birth time is converted, where the planet positions come from, how signs, houses and aspects are worked out, how numerology and Human Design are calculated, and how the written words are checked against your chart. We also say plainly what the accuracy of the math does and does not prove.

What goes into a birth chart calculation?

Three inputs: your birth date, your birth time and your birth city. From the city we take its latitude, its longitude and its time zone, using a database of cities with their coordinates and official time zone names.

Each input does a different job. The date and time fix the exact moment. The time zone turns your local clock time into universal time. The latitude and longitude decide which part of the zodiac was rising and overhead, which sets your rising sign and houses. If you are unsure of any of these, our guide to how a birth chart works explains why each one matters.

How is your local birth time converted?

Your local birth time is converted to Coordinated Universal Time (UTC) using the historical time zone rules for your city on your birth date. This step matters more than most people expect.

Clocks have not always followed today's rules. Daylight saving time started and stopped on different dates in different decades, some places used wartime time, and some regions changed zones entirely. We use the standard international time zone database, which records these historical changes, and check the offset twice so that births near a clock change resolve to the right instant. In our own checks, cases such as older US daylight saving rules, 1942 war time, southern hemisphere summer time and a spring-forward gap all resolved as expected.

Where do the planet positions come from?

From an ephemeris, a program that calculates where each body is at any moment. We use Astronomy Engine, an open-source astronomical library by Don Cross.

For each chart we calculate the apparent position of each body as seen from Earth, measured along the ecliptic of that date. The set is:

  • The Sun and Moon
  • Mercury, Venus, Mars, Jupiter and Saturn
  • Uranus, Neptune and Pluto
  • The North Node, using the true node, and the South Node directly opposite it

Retrograde motion is flagged from each planet's daily movement: if a planet is moving backward through the zodiac at your birth, the chart marks it.

How accurate are the positions?

In Venara's own tests against NASA JPL data and published reference charts, positions agreed to within about one arcminute. An arcminute is one sixtieth of a degree. For comparison, a zodiac sign is 30 degrees wide, so an arcminute is tiny in practice.

To be exact about the wording: the positions come from Astronomy Engine, not directly from NASA. NASA JPL data was the yardstick we tested against.

How are signs, houses and angles worked out?

Signs use the tropical zodiac, the standard in Western astrology, which measures the signs from the March equinox. Each sign is 30 degrees. If you are curious how this differs from the sidereal zodiac used in Vedic astrology, see tropical vs sidereal.

For the angles, we calculate the local sidereal time (star time at your birthplace) and use it with your latitude to find the Ascendant, the degree rising in the east, and the Midheaven, the highest point of the ecliptic. These are only calculated when your birth time is known.

For the houses:

  1. Placidus is used whenever your birth time is known.
  2. Whole Sign is used instead for births above 66 degrees latitude, north or south, because Placidus becomes unreliable near the polar circles.
  3. No houses are shown if your birth time is unknown.

Placidus vs Whole Sign houses explains the difference between the two systems.

What aspect orbs do we use?

An aspect is a set angle between two points in the chart, and an orb is how far from exact it can be and still count. We use fixed orbs, with a wider allowance when the Sun or Moon is involved.

AspectAngleOrbOrb with Sun or Moon
Conjunction0°7°8°
Opposition180°7°8°
Square90°6°7°
Trine120°6°7°
Sextile60°4°5°

Aspects are calculated between the ten planets, and to the Ascendant and Midheaven when your birth time is known.

What changes when you do not know your birth time?

We cast the chart for noon on your birth date and leave out anything that depends on the exact time, instead of guessing. Here is what that means in practice.

With a birth timeWithout a birth time
All planet signs and degreesPlanet signs, with the Moon's exact degree left out
Rising sign, Midheaven and all 12 housesLeft out
Aspects to the Ascendant and MidheavenLeft out
Human Design chartLeft out
Love forecast to Venus, Mars, Moon, Descendant and 7th house rulerLove forecast to Venus and Mars only

Most planet signs are reliable from the date alone. The Moon is the exception worth knowing about: it moves about 13 degrees a day, so on some dates it changes sign, and its exact degree is uncertain without a time.

How are numerology and Human Design calculated?

Numerology uses the Pythagorean system, where A is 1, B is 2 and so on to I at 9, then the pattern repeats.

  • Life Path: the month, day and year are each reduced to one digit, keeping 11, 22 and 33, then added and reduced again.
  • Expression, Soul Urge and Personality: each part of your name is added up and reduced separately, then combined. Soul Urge uses vowels, Personality uses consonants, and Y counts as a vowel when it is not next to another vowel.
  • Personal Year: your birth month and day plus the current calendar year, reduced to a single digit from 1 to 9.

Human Design, Ra Uru Hu's system, needs two moments. The first is your birth. The second, the design moment, is found by numerical search for when the Sun was exactly 88 degrees of the zodiac earlier, roughly three months before birth. At both moments we calculate the Sun, Earth, Moon, both nodes and the planets from Mercury to Pluto, map each to one of 64 gates, and then work out channels, defined centers, type, authority and profile. Human Design is only calculated when your birth time is known.

How are the words in a reading written and checked?

Interpretations start from a written library, with a passage for each placement, such as Venus in Libra or a Life Path 6. A language model then rewrites those passages for your chart and your quiz answers, so the reading sounds like it was written for you.

Then a validator checks the result. It rejects any sentence that names a sign, house, aspect or number that is not in your chart, such as the wrong sign for your Moon or an aspect you do not have. If a section fails, it is retried once. If it still fails, the reading falls back to the original library passages.

Finally, every report section lists the placements it was built from. You can read "Venus in Scorpio, Moon in Aquarius" next to a paragraph and check it against your own chart.

What does accurate math not prove?

It does not prove that astrology is true. Precise positions tell you where the planets were. They say nothing about whether those positions shape personality or relationships.

We keep those two claims separate on purpose. The planetary positions are astronomy. The interpretations are a symbolic tradition, and controlled tests, such as Shawn Carlson's 1985 double-blind study, did not find that astrologers could match charts to personality profiles better than chance. How can you check your own chart?

Three steps:

  1. Confirm your birth data. Find your exact birth time and city. A birth certificate is the best source.
  2. Get your chart and read the placements. Start your free reading. Your reveal names your love archetype and lists the placements behind it.
  3. Cross-check with a second calculator. Compare your planet signs and degrees with another reputable tool that uses the tropical zodiac. Small differences of an arcminute or two are normal; a different sign usually means a different birth time, time zone or zodiac setting.

Frequently asked questions

How accurate is Venara's birth chart calculation?

In Venara's own tests against NASA JPL data and published reference charts, positions agreed to within about one arcminute. An arcminute is one sixtieth of a degree, far smaller than anything that changes a sign or house in ordinary use. The accuracy of the math says nothing about whether astrological interpretations are true.

Which zodiac and house system does Venara use?

Venara uses the tropical zodiac, the standard in Western astrology, where signs are measured from the March equinox. For houses it uses Placidus when your birth time is known, and switches to Whole Sign for births above 66 degrees latitude, where Placidus stops working reliably.

What happens if I do not know my birth time?

The chart is cast for noon on your birth date. The planet signs are still calculated, but the rising sign, the houses and the Moon's exact degree are left out rather than guessed, because they depend on the exact time. Human Design is also left out, and love forecasts use only your Venus and Mars.

Does Venara use AI to write readings?

Yes, for wording only. Interpretations start from a written library for each placement. A language model rewrites them for your chart and answers, and a validator rejects any sentence that names a sign, house, aspect or number not in your chart. Every section lists the placements it came from so you can check it.

What numerology system does Venara use?

Venara uses Pythagorean numerology, where A is 1 through I at 9 and the pattern repeats. The Life Path reduces month, day and year separately and keeps the master numbers 11, 22 and 33. Name numbers reduce each name separately, and Y counts as a vowel when it is not next to another vowel.
