Human Design Authority: How You Make Good Decisions

Human Design authority explained: what each of the eight authorities means, how your chart decides which one you have, and how to use it for decisions in love.

Quick answer

In Human Design, your authority is the way you are advised to make decisions. It comes from which centers are defined in your chart, checked in a set order. Emotional authority waits for clarity over time, Sacral authority trusts a gut yes or no, and Splenic authority trusts a quiet instant knowing. Others work through willpower, speaking out loud, talking with trusted people or waiting a lunar cycle.

Key takeaways

  • Your Human Design authority describes how you are advised to make decisions, especially big ones.
  • Authority is decided by your defined centers, checked in a fixed order starting with the Solar Plexus.
  • Emotional authority, the most talked about, says to wait out your emotional wave before deciding.
  • Authority is a reflection tool from Ra Uru Hu's system, not a proven method, so test it against your own experience.

You say yes to a second date, then wake up the next morning wishing you had not. Or you turn down something that, a week later, you realize you wanted. Most people have a decision-making style that works for them and one that does not. Human Design calls the working one your authority.

Your type tells you how your energy works. Your authority tells you how to decide. In love, that second part is often the more useful. Should I say yes? Should I stay? Should I commit? Authority is Human Design's answer to how to reach those decisions well.

This guide covers all eight authorities, how your chart decides which one you have and how to use it in relationships. As always with Human Design: treat it as a reflection tool, not a rulebook.

What is authority in Human Design?

In Human Design, authority is the part of you that is said to make reliable decisions. It is based on which centers in your chart are defined. Centers are the nine energy hubs drawn on the Human Design body chart, called the bodygraph.

The system, created by Ra Uru Hu, teaches that the mind is good at analyzing and poor at deciding. Authority is where the decision is supposed to come from instead: the body, the emotions, the voice or time itself. Your strategy, set by your type, tells you when to engage. Your authority tells you how to choose once you do.

How is your authority decided?

Your authority is decided by checking your defined centers in a fixed order. The first one that applies is your authority. Here is the order used in Human Design, and in Venara's calculation.

OrderIf this is trueAuthorityHow it decides
1You are a ReflectorLunarOver a full lunar cycle
2Solar Plexus center definedEmotionalOver time, once the feeling settles
3Sacral center definedSacralA gut yes or no in the moment
4Spleen center definedSplenicA quiet, instant knowing

6Heart defined, not linked to the ThroatEgo ProjectedBy hearing yourself talk about what you want
7G center linked to the ThroatSelf-ProjectedBy speaking it out loud

Because the Solar Plexus comes first after the Reflector check, emotional authority overrides everything else. A Generator with a defined Solar Plexus has emotional authority, not Sacral authority, even though their Sacral is defined.

What does each Human Design authority mean?

Each authority describes a different path to clarity. Here is each one in plain words.

Emotional authority

Clarity comes over time, not in the moment. People with emotional authority are said to move through waves of feeling, from high to low. The advice: do not decide at the peak or the bottom. Wait until you feel steady about it, which might take hours or days.

Sacral authority

Your body knows before your mind does. The Sacral responds in the moment, often with a sound like "uh-huh" or "unh-unh". The advice: let people ask you yes or no questions, and trust that first gut response over the story you tell afterward.

Splenic authority

A quiet, instant knowing that speaks once. It is often described as a flicker of "this is right" or "something is off". The advice: notice it the first time, because it does not repeat itself, and it is easy to talk yourself out of.

Ego Manifested and Ego Projected authority

Both come from the Heart center, which Human Design links to willpower. Ego Manifested authority asks: what do I truly want, and is my heart in it? Ego Projected authority finds that answer by talking about it and hearing what comes out.

Self-Projected authority

Your truth comes out when you speak. The advice: talk the decision over with someone you trust, not to get their opinion, but to hear your own voice. What you say is the answer.

Mental authority

Sometimes called environmental or outer authority. It applies to some Projectors with definition only in the upper centers. The advice: talk it through with the right people in the right setting, and give yourself time before deciding.

Lunar authority

For Reflectors only. Because they have no defined centers, Human Design advises them to wait about 28 days before big decisions, noticing how they feel about the choice across a whole lunar cycle.

How do you use your authority in love?

Use it most for the big decisions: starting something, committing, moving in, ending things. For small choices, you do not need to consult anything.

Here is how that looks for the three most common authorities:

  • Emotional authority in love. Sleep on the big conversations. Tell a partner early, "I need a day before I answer big questions. It is not doubt, it is how I get clear." That one sentence prevents a lot of hurt.
  • Sacral authority in love. Ask your partner to phrase big questions as yes or no, and notice your first gut response. If your body says no while your mind says "but they are so nice", take the body seriously.
  • Splenic authority in love. Pay attention to your first impression of a person. The quiet "something is off" or "this feels safe" is said to be your most reliable signal, even when it is inconvenient.

Authority can also help with conflict. When a disagreement heats up, emotional authority says not to decide anything until the wave passes. That lines up with a common piece of relationship advice. The Gottman Institute describes stonewalling and defensiveness as patterns to catch, and one practical fix it discusses is taking a real break before trying to resolve things. Waiting for clarity is not the same as shutting down, as long as you say you are coming back.

If you are wrestling with a commitment decision specifically, fear of commitment in your chart looks at the astrology side of that question.

Does Human Design authority really work?

There is no scientific evidence for it. Human Design is Ra Uru Hu's synthesis of astrology, the I Ching, the Kabbalah and the chakra system, and its claims have not been tested in controlled studies. The planetary positions behind the chart are real astronomy. What they are said to mean is a belief system.

Many people still find authority useful, and it is easy to see why. "Wait until your feelings settle before a big decision" is sensible for almost anyone. "Notice your first gut response" is a good habit too. The fair way to use authority is to test it: try your authority's approach for a few decisions and see whether your choices feel better afterward.

What should you do with your authority?

Three steps:

  1. Find your authority with an accurate birth time. Authority depends on defined centers, which depend on time. Start your free reading with your birth date, time and city; Venara calculates Human Design only when the time is known.
  2. Test it on three decisions. Pick three choices this month, big or medium. Use your authority's method for each and write down how you feel a week later.
  3. Tell your partner how you decide. Share your authority in one sentence. For guidance on what you actually want from a partner in the first place, read how to know what you want in a partner.

Frequently asked questions

What is the most common Human Design authority?

Emotional authority is generally described as the most common, because it applies to anyone with a defined Solar Plexus center, whatever their type. It overrides every other authority in the chart. People with it are advised not to make big decisions in the moment, but to wait until their feelings settle.

What is the difference between Sacral and Splenic authority?

Sacral authority is a gut response in the moment, often heard as an 'uh-huh' or 'unh-unh' sound when someone asks a yes or no question. Splenic authority is a quieter, instant knowing that speaks once and does not repeat. Sacral responds to what is in front of you; Splenic senses what is safe or right.

How do I use emotional authority in a relationship?

Sleep on the big conversations. Emotional authority says clarity comes over time, so avoid committing, ending things or making promises at the high or low point of a feeling. Tell your partner you need a day or two before answering big questions, so your pause is not mistaken for doubt.

Can my authority change?

In Human Design, your authority is fixed by your birth chart and does not change. What can change is how well you listen to it. Note that your authority depends on an accurate birth time, so a chart calculated with the wrong time may show a different authority than your true one.

What authority does a Reflector have?

Reflectors have Lunar authority. Because they have no defined centers, Human Design advises them to wait about a full lunar cycle, roughly 28 days, before making significant decisions. Over that month they are encouraged to talk the decision through and notice how they feel about it across different days.
