Find your Venus sign
Calculated from real planetary positions for your exact time and place. Nothing is saved unless you continue to your reading.
Quick answer
The Venus sign calculator above finds where Venus was when you were born, along with your Sun, Moon, Mars and rising sign. Enter your birth date, time and city. The date alone usually gives your Venus sign, because Venus is always your Sun sign or within two signs of it. The time and city make the Moon and rising sign accurate.
Key takeaways
- The calculator needs your birth date, and ideally your birth time and city, to place each planet correctly.
- Your Venus sign is always your Sun sign or one of the two signs on either side of it.
- Venus and Mars rarely change sign within a day, but the Moon and rising sign need an accurate time.
- The city lets the calculator apply the right time zone and historical daylight saving rules.
The calculator above gives you five placements in a few seconds: your Sun, Moon, Venus, Mars and rising sign. Most people come for the Venus sign, because it says far more about love than a Sun sign horoscope ever will.
This guide is the companion to that calculator. It explains what the calculator needs and why, what each result means, how to handle tricky birth data like an unknown time or a birth near a sign change, and what to do once you have your answer.
What does the Venus sign calculator need, and why?
It needs your birth date, and ideally your birth time and birth city. Each one does a different job.
- Date. This sets where the Sun, Venus and Mars were. For most people, the date alone gives the right Venus sign.
- Time. This pins down the Moon, which moves quickly, and the rising sign, which changes roughly every 2 hours.
- City. This gives your latitude and longitude, which the rising sign depends on. It also tells the calculator which time zone and daylight saving rules applied where you were born, on that date.
Use the local clock time from your birth record, exactly as written. Do not convert it to another time zone yourself. The city takes care of that. If you are not sure of your time, our guide to finding your birth time lists where to look.
What does each result in the calculator mean?
Each placement describes a different part of you. Here is a quick guide:
| Result | What it describes | Needs an exact time? |
|---|---|---|
| Sun sign | Your core identity and sense of self | Only if born on a day the Sun changed sign |
| Moon sign | Your emotional needs and what makes you feel safe | Often, since the Moon changes sign about every 2.5 days |
| Venus sign | Your style in love: attraction, affection, what you value | Rarely, only on a day Venus changed sign |
| Mars sign | How you pursue, desire and handle conflict | Rarely, only on a day Mars changed sign |
| Rising sign | First impressions and how you start relationships | Yes, it changes roughly every 2 hours |
Venus is the one most people look for. Your Venus sign is the zodiac sign Venus was in when you were born, and astrologers read it as your love style. For a full explanation, read what your Venus sign means.
Venus and Mars work as a pair. Venus shows what attracts you and how you give affection. Mars shows how you go after what you want. Our guide to Venus and Mars in your chart explains how to read them together.
Why is Venus always within two signs of your Sun?
Because Venus orbits the Sun inside Earth's orbit. From where we stand, Venus never appears far from the Sun in the sky. The greatest distance it reaches is about 47 degrees. That is why you only ever see Venus near sunrise or sunset, never at midnight.
Each zodiac sign is 30 degrees wide. So 47 degrees is less than two full signs. That means your Venus sign is always one of five options: your Sun sign, one of the two signs before it, or one of the two signs after it.
A worked example. If your Sun is in Leo, your Venus can only be in Gemini, Cancer, Leo, Virgo or Libra. It can never be in Aquarius or Capricorn. If a calculator ever gives you a Venus sign more than two signs from your Sun, something went wrong with the date or the software.
How do you read edge cases?
Most people get a clean answer. A few birth details need extra care.
What if you do not know your birth time?
You still get a reliable Sun, Venus and Mars sign on most days. Without a time, charts are usually cast for noon. Venus normally spends about a month in each sign, and in a retrograde year it can stay in one sign for around four months, so a noon estimate is almost always right. Mars averages about 6 to 7 weeks per sign.
The Moon is less certain, because it changes sign about every 2.5 days. If the Moon changed signs on your birth date, you will need the time to know which one applies. The rising sign cannot be known without a time at all. Our guide to charts without a birth time explains what you can still learn.
What if you were born near a sign change?
If Venus, the Sun or another planet changed signs on your birth date, the exact time decides which sign you get. This is where an accurate birth record matters most. It is also why fixed "sign date" tables online can be wrong for people born near the edges: the dates the Sun enters each sign shift by a day or so from year to year.
What about time zones and daylight saving?
This is the most common source of error. Daylight saving rules have changed many times, and they differ by country and even by region. A birth at 7:30 in the morning might have been 6:30 in standard time. Entering your city lets the calculator apply the rule that was in force where and when you were born. Enter the time as written on your birth record, and let the city do the rest.
What if your Venus and Sun are in the same sign?
That is common, and it simply means your love style and your core identity speak the same language. A Taurus Sun with Venus in Taurus tends to love the way it lives: steadily and through the senses. The upside is consistency. The pattern to watch is that you may have fewer contrasting qualities to draw on in a relationship, so a partner who is different from you can be a real gift.
What if Venus was retrograde when you were born?
Venus goes retrograde about every 19 months for roughly 40 days, so some people are born during one of those windows. The calculator still gives you a normal Venus sign. Astrologers often read a retrograde natal Venus as a love style that looks inward first and takes longer to trust its own feelings. Our guide to Venus retrograde and love explains the cycle.
How accurate is the calculator?
The positions come from a real astronomical ephemeris, a set of equations for where the planets are at any moment. Venara uses the open-source Astronomy Engine library and the tropical zodiac. In Venara's own tests against NASA JPL data and published reference charts, positions agreed to within about one arcminute, a tiny fraction of a degree.
The biggest source of error is almost always the input, not the math. A wrong time zone or a rounded birth time can change the Moon or rising sign. If another website shows a different Venus sign, check whether it uses the sidereal zodiac. Our explainer on tropical vs sidereal covers why the two differ by about 24 degrees.
The planetary positions are real astronomy. What each sign means for love is a symbolic tradition, best used for self-reflection rather than prediction.
What should you do with your results?
Read your Venus sign first, then your Moon, then the rest. Three concrete steps:
- Read about your Venus sign. Start with what is my Venus sign, then open the article for your sign.
- Check your rising sign if you know your time. The rising sign calculator guide explains what your Ascendant says about first impressions.
- Put Venus and Moon together. Venara names a love archetype from your Moon's element and your Venus sign, 48 combinations in all. You can see your free reveal in about 90 seconds, with a short reading written for your chart.
Frequently asked questions
How do I calculate my Venus sign?
Enter your birth date, time and city in the calculator above. It works out where Venus was in the tropical zodiac at that moment, using an astronomical ephemeris. If you do not know your time, the date alone gives the right Venus sign on most days, because Venus usually spends about a month in each sign.
Why is my Venus sign different from my Sun sign?
Because the Sun and Venus are two different bodies in different places. Venus stays close to the Sun in our sky but not on top of it. It can be up to about 47 degrees away, so your Venus sign can be your Sun sign or up to two signs either side. Many people have a different Venus sign from their Sun sign.
Can I find my Venus sign without a birth time?
Usually, yes. Venus typically stays in one sign for about a month, and in retrograde years for up to around four months. So unless Venus changed signs on your birth date, the time does not change your Venus sign. You do need the time for your rising sign and, on some days, your Moon sign.
Why does another website show a different Venus sign?
The most common reason is that it uses the sidereal zodiac, which currently sits about 24 degrees away from the tropical zodiac most Western astrologers use. The calculator above uses the tropical zodiac. Other causes are a wrong time zone, a mistyped date or a Venus sign change on your birth date.
What does my Venus sign mean?
Your Venus sign describes your style in love: what you find attractive, how you show affection and what makes you feel valued. It is different from your Sun sign, which describes your core identity. Read your Venus sign together with your Moon sign for a fuller picture of what you need in a relationship.
